Parents and other volunteers in the classroom

Parents and community volunteers do not require much direction to help learners play these games, because the rules are printed right on the game boards. They are likely to have the typical questions that come up during game use, so you can show them this website.

A volunteer helper can play with an individual learner, or can facilitate one or two learner pairs. The volunteer should read the rules out loud, and should pay attention to make sure that learners are following the rules. The volunteer should also prompt learners who make errors. Volunteers can also offer valuable help with these games by gathering needed materials before sessions and reorganizing materials afterwards.

Volunteer helpers should have a way to let the teacher know how learners have been doing. It may be helpful to establish communication guidelines for volunteers in advance.

Does the school district or school have any rules about classroom volunteers? Before volunteers start helping in a classroom, they should have the opportunity to learn what the ground rules are.
